Chapter 6

T wo days later and who knew how many animated movies, Angie felt as if the walls of the house were closing in on her. Clark refused to let them go to the backyard despite all the security cameras around.

Too bad. She lunged to her feet. A child couldn’t be cooped up in a house all the time. It wasn’t healthy.

Leaving Elena to finish her movie, Angie went in search of Clark. He sat behind his desk, hunched over his laptop as he’d been since they arrived at his house. “I’m taking Elena out back to pick flowers.”

He glanced up and frowned. “No.”

“I am.” She crossed her arms and gave him her best “do not argue with me” look. “She can’t stay inside for who knows how long.”

He rolled his shoulders. “I’m trying to find out what’s going on, Angie.”

“I understand that, Clark.” She put emphasis on his name. “My concern is for Elena.”

“Mine isn’t?”

She closed her eyes and took a calming breath. “I know it is. We’ll be perfectly safe. Have you found out anything more?”

“Bolton is on his way over to talk about the fundraiser and those he spoke to about adoption. He questioned several of the staff yesterday. The ones people could remember anyway.” He sighed. “Fine. Take Elena outside. Just remember what happened at the zoo.”

She stiffened. How dare he blame that on her. She’d saved his life. Despite Clark apologizing for his statement, she marched from his office and went to fetch Elena.

“Did you talk to Clark about a dog?” Elena turned away from the movie.

“I thought we agreed days ago no dog.” The child never let anything go.

“If we had a dog, we could go outside more. It would let us know if someone was around.”

“Why didn’t I think of that?” Clark grinned from the doorway. “Let’s take a ride to the animal shelter.”

“Are you nuts?” Angie hissed. “She’ll be recognized.”

“No, she won’t.” He tossed Elena a hat and movie-star big sunglasses.

“Yay!” Elena turned off her movie and thundered to her room. “I want a big dog,” she yelled.

“You don’t want to go in your own backyard, but you’ll go to an animal shelter?”

“Elena needs a playmate. A dog is a good warning system. A loyal dog will protect its master no matter what. It can sleep in her room, follow her around, and teach her some responsibility. We’ll go straight there and back.”

“What if we’re followed?” The man changed his mind more than anyone she knew.

“We won’t be. I’ve asked Lance and Bolton to tail us. Bolton will let us know what he learned when we return.” He turned and left her standing with her mouth open at his abrupt change of mind. By now she should know not to get upset until Clark had had time to think over her request.

Half an hour later, they rode in a black jeep toward the animal shelter on the outskirts of the city. A Jaguar and an SUV followed. One behind them, and one to the side.
